Performing Queries

The query tool  is used to perform searches within the map data.

Query window image

  1. Selects the Field from the database in which to search, e.g. GENUS or COUNTRY.
  2. Selects the operator that best defines the relationship of the field to its data (=,<,>,<=,>=, LIKE).
  3. Type the specific piece of data you are looking for into the box labeled value. (All text must be capitalized to match the data).
  4. Click the Add to Query String button . This will add the criteria into the box next to Add to Query String. If multiple criteria are necessary for a search an operator such as AND may be added to the execute string and another query entered.
  5. Click Execute, when finished adding search criteria to the query string,

EXAMPLE, to view all  Tadarida from Texas

Query window image with sample data

  1. Select STATE from the field list
  2. Select “=” under the operator pull down menu
  3. Type in TEXAS in the value box.
  4. Click Add to Query String to add the search criteria  to the Execute box. (At this point if you clicked Execute it would bring up all the localities in the state of TEXAS.)

To limit it to only those localities where Tadarida were found:

  1. Click on the AND button to tell the software that you are going to add more criteria to the query string.
  2. Select STATE from the field list.
  3. Select “=” under the operator pull down menu
  4. Type TADARIDA in the value box.
  5. Click Add to Query String to add this new statement to the existing query string.
  6. Click Execute once all the criteria you need for one search is entered.

The result should be that the localities from which Tadarida were collected within Texas should be highlighted in blue with a list of the records in the space at the bottom of the screen for you to stroll through.

Keep in mind if you zoom in or out past a certain scale, the layer in which the data points were selected may no longer be in view and although the layers are identical, the blue points may no longer be visible. You must rerun the query  on the other Mammal Collecting Locality layer that is currently visible in order to allow the points to be highlighted at this new map scale.
