For
over a year the space that was available for museum cases, etc.
was totally full. We had reached a stage where it was impossible
to curate specimens, add additional specimens to the collections,
or to do the things necessary for proper curation. The solution
to this problem was the addition of the new wing that was funded
by a grant from the Ben E. Keith Foundation. That new wing almost
triples the mount of space available for collections. The new
wing is essentially finished and we anticipate taking possession
within the next 30 or 60 days. (Written on 28 September 2005)
The
new addition not only will permit us to more than double our holdings
of mammals, (current holdings are over 100,000 specimens) but
part of the contract to build the new wing included a tripling
of the space available for the frozen tissue collection. Further,
there are continual changes in how tissues are collected and stored.
In addition to the cryopreserved collection, samples in lysis
buffer can be stored at room temperature. We now have named our
tissues samples collection as the Genetic Resources Collection
which more accurately reflects the contents of and complexity
of the collection.
