Dr. Davis
studied the mammals of Texas for more than half a century
and is universally acknowledged as the father of Texas
mammalogy. Formerly he was a professor and Head of the
Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas
A&M University, and an advisor to scores of graduate
students. Dr. Davis retired to Bryan, Texas in 19--. He
died in 19--.
David J. Schmidly

Dr.
Schmidly is a noted mammalogist and the sole surviving
author of The Mammals of Texas. In
August 1996, he returned to Texas Tech University where
he obtained his B.S. and M.S. Today, Dr. Schmidly is
Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies, Dean of
the Graduate School at Texas Tech University. As a
faculty member in the Department of Biology and a member
of the Natural Science Research Laboratory, he personally
teaches classes in mammology and directs the research of
graduate students. Dr. Schmidly has also authored The
Bats of Texas, The Mammals of Trans-Pecos Texas and Texas
Mammals East of the Balcones Fault Zone.
